ISDE 2024 Social Evening

We are delighted to invite you to the ISDE Social Evening, which celebrates Scottish culture, culinary specialties and traditional entertainment.

Date: Monday, September 23, 2024
Time: 19:00 – 22:30
Venue: The Playfair Building, Surgeons Quarter, Nicolson Street, Edinburgh EH8 9DS
Ticket cost: USD 100 per person

Venue

Surgeons Quarter, including the Surgeons’ Hall Museums are owned by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), which was founded in 1505 and the Museums’ collections have grown significantly from 1699 after ‘natural and artificial curiosities’ were publicly sought. In the 1800s, the original museum expanded to include the remarkable collections of surgeon and anatomists, Sir Charles Bell and John Barclay.

Originally developed as a teaching museum for students of medicine, SHM’s fascinating collections, including bone and tissue specimens, artefacts and works of art, have been open to the public since 1832, making SHM among Scotland’s oldest museums. The Wohl Pathology Museum is also home to one of the largest and most historic collections of surgical pathology in the world.

ISDE Social Evening attendees will have an opportunity to explore the full museum at no additional charge.

Scottish Cuisine

We will welcome you with a glass of sparkling wine, followed by a culinary journey with a selection of local Scottish cuisine. Surgeons Quarter chefs will prepare traditional food using the finest local ingredients, showcasing Scotland’s rich and diverse flavors. Food will be served as finger buffet with a selection of wine, beers and soft drinks to accompany the meal.

Local Entertainment

Actors from the Real Mary Kings Close will portray surgical characters from days gone by – each character will mingle and reminisce what their life and work was like. This can include a renowned physician during the worst outbreak of the plague in Edinburgh, Edinburgh’s first Plague Doctor, “the Foul Clengers” who were cleaning houses of people affected by the plague in the deadly 1645 epidemic.

The evening will also feature traditional Scottish music, including live performances of traditional folk songs and lively cèilidh dances. Please proceed to The Deacon Suite at The Prince Philip Building from 9pm.

Attire

We encourage guests to embrace the Scottish spirit by dressing in semi-formal or traditional Scottish attire.
